Abugov-Kaspar carried out a major addition and renovation to the Beverly Centre, a long term care facility originally built in the 1960s. As a part of this work, we provided interior services to recreate the centre with a hospitality-like atmosphere in order to counter the institutional nature of the facility. This was an early project in what has become a successful practice in long term care facility design.

The Beverly Centre Glenmore demonstrates some of the design approaches that have become standard in our long term care projects. Natural light is introduced through skylights, including a large skylight spanning a two-storey atrium encircled by second-storey terracing. The institutional-style cafeteria was replaced with a number of smaller, more intimate components, each with their own distinct atmosphere enabling residents to choose from a variety of restaurant-like experiences. Redesign of the kitchen supports the expanded array of dining areas and menu choices. Finishes are selected to assist way finding, with colour coding used to identify wings and floors. Colours are also selected for psychological impacts that relate to function, such as fostering calm or stimulating appetite.
